DIGITALIZATION IN EDUCATION -
TOWARDS A SMART EDUCATION ECOSYSTEM

The outstanding development of information technology and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic have created a strong digital wave in education. The smart education paradigm has gradually become popularly and widely applied to grow the interaction between teachers and students, make students become more interested in learning and improve the quality of education.

What is smart education?

Smart education is a learning paradigm supported by 4.0 technology, giving students flexible time and place to study, creating the excitement of learning and teaching, as well as adapting to modern technology. This is an inevitable tendency, opening up opportunities for development and depth in education. In the National Seminar featuring the theme “University Autonomy and Building A Smart University Paradigm – From Theory to Practice“, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Vu Bich Hien – Rector of Hanoi Metropolitan University shared that completing the smart education paradigm necessarily closely links universities – managers – businesses to innovate, increase productivity and efficiency in education.

Accordingly, in the National Digitalization Program to 2025, with orientation to 2030 approved in Decision No. 749/QD-TTg dated June 3, 2020, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc stated that nowadays, developing the education platform to support in management, teaching and learning is the necessary task. Applying technology for education allows students to learn online 20% of the total program to enhance the experience and build the most convenient learning environment.

Based on that platform, through the National Conference on Vietnam E-Government 2020 was organized by International Data Group in Vietnam (IDG Vietnam) with the topic “Developing E-Government Contributing To Public Service Portal Towards Digital Government – Models & Solutions”, the representative from British University Vietnam have shared about innovations in smart education, from converse of pedagogical models to taking learners as a center, British University Vietnam is gradually redirecting knowledge and aiming to create conditions for discovery, to boot creating new knowledge to make a learning space suitable for the 4.0 era.

International Business Machines (IBM) defines that smart education is also a student-centered multidisciplinary education system that links across schools, education, institutions and workforce training, using:

  1. The programs are suitable for students.
  2. Collaborative technologies and libraries for both students and teachers.
  3. Digitalization of the administration, monitoring, and reporting for teachers.
  4. Student information is collected more accurately and completely.
  5. E-libraries are available for students to access anytime, anywhere, and more conveniently.

This is the goal that Vietnam is aiming for educational development in the new era to promote flexibility but still ensure standard quality in training and teaching.

Modern tendency in education

In fact, since 2013, the Ministry of Education and Training has united with Samsung Electronics applying and implementing smart education in Hanoi. But it was not until 2019, smart education increased dramatically in Vietnam and became a widely useful model in education.

After all, smart education is gradually becoming the trend of modern education. Education institutions and managers gradually accept and adapt to the changes of the times. The digitalization in education not only helps create excitement in learning but also creates transparency in the process of assessment and management.

However, the transition to a smart education ecosystem still deals with many difficulties and inadequacies, requiring a lot of effort to overcome. For example, network infrastructure and information technology equipment (such as computers, cameras, projectors …) is still limited, many universities are still lacking and outdated in internet infrastructure, lack of synchronization, which widen the distance in learning opportunities and also access to knowledge.

Moreover, the digitalization of the document, updating and verification of e-materials requires a huge human and material investment to ensure the construction of quality, complete and consistent digital document repository timely update. Each subject needs to prepare a learning solution system from e-books, e-libraries, e-lectures, and electronic question banks.

Understanding the important issues in the digitalization process from traditional education to smart education, International Data Group in Vietnam (IDG Vietnam) in collaboration with the Government Office, Ministry of Information and Communications Media, and People’s Committee of Quang Ninh province will organize the Vietnam E-Government Conference and Expo 2022 with the participation of speakers and leading experts in the field of information technology. Presenting on the topic “Developing The Population Database Application And Solutions For The Digital Economy And Society Enhancement Toward The National Digital Transformation Goals”, the event will continue to deliver useful information and alleviate backlog issues in 2021. Furthermore, share details about population data and introduce the most recent information technology applications to support the development period 2022-2025.

In September 2022, IDG Vietnam cordially invites you to attend the Vietnam E-Government Conference and Expo 2022 to listen to the useful sharings about residential database applications and understand solutions to promote digital economy, and digital society, towards the goal of national digitalization.
