APPLICATION OF VIRTUAL REALITY TECHNOLOGY IN THE TOURISM FIELD

Experience-based tourism by using virtual reality technology is essential for the growth of local and international industries. This technology will officially launch a new stage of the revolution known as Tourism 4.0.

What is the definition of Virtual Reality Technology?

Virtual Reality is the simulation of virtual reality technology by specialized software when users wear 3-D glasses to view the image displayed on the screen, along with other effects such as sound, creating a real space, and maximizing the emotional responses customers wish to experience.

In addition, virtual reality technology is advancing rapidly and can be accessed comfortably on other electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops. Therefore, users may not have to spend a fortune on specialized glasses.

Application of virtual reality technologies in the tourism field nowadays

The use of virtual reality technologies in the tourism sector is based on VR and AR technologies. It is an unavoidable outcome of meeting the travel needs of people all over the world. Nowadays, virtual reality technology is gradually being implemented in the tourism industry to transform travel behavior into an experience that people can immediately experience due to its inherent potential benefits.

Virtual reality technology helps reduce expenses and saves time before and after a trip since tourists frequently purchase a great deal of time and money in planning, finding a location, type of clothing, mode of transportation, and thousands of issues that arise during the process. Recognizing these challenges, the emergence of virtual reality technology will make these issues more manageable, while requiring only a computer or smartphone which can assist them to have a trip immediately, optimizing as in almost everything.

Furthermore, in order to participate in activities such as climbing or sailing, tourists must be in good condition; however, what if we have heart problems or high blood pressure but still want to participate? This is another advantage of virtual reality tourism because it does not require much about the health of customers.

Specifically, with the experience gained from the Covid-19 pandemic, the application technologies to serve the tourism industry during social isolation, such as 3D Tour and 360 VR Tour, enable everyone to travel without going to an airport. Simultaneously, virtual tourism has evolved into a destination marketing channel, contributing to the development and promotion of conventional tourism. Mr. Pham Minh Quang – General Director of Dolphin Tour, stated: “This can be considered an opportunity for traditional tourism to recover after the Covid-19 epidemic has been quickly contained”.

Despite the fact that virtual tourism offers numerous advantages, there are still a variety of characteristics that cannot be replaced by virtual tourism

As a matter of course, virtual tourism cannot replace actual tourism because, according to travel experts, simulation models cannot bring fact-based emotions and memorable things or cultural experiences that arise during the direct exploration of landmarks. As clarified by analyst Avi Greengart of consulting firm Techsponential (technology consulting company), when experiencing tourism using virtual reality technology, visitors cannot enjoy unique cuisine, local uniqueness, missing out on real experiences, or simply chance encounters with local people.

In Vietnam, the digital transformation process in the tourism industry currently has many limitations, including the uneven quality of human resources, low management skills, and inadequate application of digital technology advances. enough. Therefore, traditional tourism is still the preferred choice.

In conclusion, the application of virtual technology in tourism today not only contributes to image promotion by providing opportunities and solutions to promote the tourism industry but also has the potential to become a future trend in the tourism industry. Therefore, tourism agencies and businesses can potentially benefit from the use of this new technology, despite its limitations.

Understanding the importance of applying virtual reality technology to the tourism sector, International Data Group (IDG Vietnam) in collaboration with the People’s Committee of Quang Ninh province, will organize Vietnam E-governement Conference & Expo 2022 with the theme of “Developing the population database application and solutions for the digital economy and society enhancement – Toward the national digital transformation goals” in Quang Ninh Province. The conference aims to analyze the positive aspects of virtual reality in the tourism industry and the solutions to help businesses develop through the application of the information shared by Information Technology national and worldwide leaders.

On the upcoming October, IDG Vietnam cordially invites you to attend the Vietnam E-governement Conference & Expo 2022  to understand more about technological innovations, the application of population data, identification, and verification to develop a digital economy and society towards the goal of national digital transformation in the period of 2022 – 2025.
